Where it all began.

My passion for family history started unexpectedly at age fifteen during a high school biology project. We were asked to document simple inherited traits—eye colour, ear-lobe type, tongue-rolling ability—and, for extra credit, to create a family tree. Within minutes of speaking with my parents, I encountered my very first brick wall… and I was hooked.

For more than 45 years, I have been researching my own family history, continually adapting to new tools, technologies, and methodologies as the field has evolved. When I began, there were no personal computers, no internet, and certainly no DNA testing. I’ve embraced every advancement since, integrating scientific innovation, digital resources, and emerging research techniques into my work. Genealogy is a constantly developing discipline, and I’ve never stopped learning.

Why become a professional genealogist?

Becoming a professional genealogist felt like a natural next step after decades of personal research. Over the years, I realised that the skills I had developed—evaluating evidence, navigating complex records, analysing DNA, and solving long-standing family puzzles—were skills that could genuinely help others. I discovered that I not only enjoyed uncovering my own family’s story but also found great fulfilment in guiding others through their discoveries.

Completing the Certificate in Genealogical Research (Distinction) through the Society of Australian Genealogists strengthened my confidence and confirmed that I had a strong foundation of knowledge to offer clients. It also reinforced my commitment to ethical, careful, and methodical research.

DNA has played a transformative role in my own genealogical journey. It allowed me to finally break through the brick wall I encountered within minutes of starting my family history as a teenager—a story that has now come full circle. I’ve also had the privilege of using DNA analysis to help an adoptee identify their birth parents, an experience that was both deeply meaningful and professionally rewarding.

One of the aspects I value most in this work is the opportunity to blend traditional documentary research with modern DNA analysis. Together, these tools can confirm relationships, resolve contradictions, and untangle even the most confusing family trees. While answers aren’t always guaranteed, I am committed to helping clients get closer to the truth and understand the stories behind the people who came before them.

Current Projects

In addition to my own family research and client work, I’m pursuing several specialised projects:

One-Journey-Study: Marchioness of Londonderry (1854)

An ancestor arrived in Australia as a teenage orphan aboard the Marchioness of Londonderry under a Family Reunification Loan scheme. Her experience sparked a deep interest in the stories of her fellow passengers. This project explores their journeys, backgrounds, and the historical context surrounding the voyage.

One-Place-Study: Walla Walla & Alma Park Cemeteries

This study focuses on two rural cemeteries in New South Wales, Australia—home to several of my ancestors. My aim is to understand how those buried there are connected to each other and to share their stories with as much depth and accuracy as possible.
